
The itra and sugandhi Festival is being organized by Delhi Tourism in tecgnical collaboration with fragrance and flavor development center Kannauj under Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, Govt. of India, essential oil Association of India and Fragrance and flavor Association of India Dilli Haat Pitam Pura from 26th Jan to 29th Jan, 2012.
Fragrance plays a vital role in our lives. Right from the delicious aroma of home cooked food, mild yet enticing smell of flowers in the spring to the most exiting smell of mitti which reminds one of the scent of first rain of season falling on dry earth, in all fragrance tantalizes in here imagination.
Fragrance invoke nostaalgia like nothing else does. No wonders then that since time immemorial man has tried to capture the essence of all things fragrant. This desire stemmed the reason why arts such as itr making or perfume making were invented.
In India, the Itr history is ad old as its civilisation. from the Indus Vally civilisation to the entry of Mughals, essential oil extraced from the herbs and flowers have been the privelege of the royals, Not many know that it was Mughal's empress Noorjahan, who first discovered rooh gulab ittar, which is now considered to be the most expensive of all ittar forms.
King Harshvardhan's city, well known as kannauj is the largest attar producing centre in India and is also known as itr city. If there is one place that has managed to keep its century old tradition of itr making intact, its kannauj, a small, but culturally rich district of Uttar Pardesh. In fact it is said that even the sewages of this town smell of flowers. Since time immemorial, a handful of ittar-traders there have been supplying the most sought fragrance to the royal families across the world.
The 2nd Itr & Sugandhi Mela will provide ample shopping opportunities if one is intrested in purchasing Indian natural perfume, itr, exotic aggarbattis, dhoopbattis, sented candles, essential oils, perfumes, room freshners and other scented products. It is also the perfect place to witness the people, who usually stay scences and create those fragrances for all to enjoy.
There will be demonstration on the art and science behind the process of rose water distillation. You will also get to see how aggarbattis and dhoopbattis are actulaay made. For those who are intrested in knowing more about itr, sugandhi and aroma therapy, you will hear experts in these fields share their knowledge. Even the art of making traditional packing for itr is stored and purified, and apart from all this, there will be several quizzes magic shows and competitions like slogan writing for both children and adults. One of the highlight of the festival is a 5.5 ft tall weight approx 8 Kgs. eco-friendly aggarbattis.
Other highlights of the event include lectures about itr, sugandhi and aromatherapy by expert and sale of fragrant products and cultural programmes every day.
